What's an umbilical cord stump?
An umbilical cord stump (or umbilicus) is the piece of umbilical cord that's left on your baby's body when the cord is clamped and cut after birth.
During pregnancy, the umbilical cord carries nourishment and oxygen to your baby from your placenta.
It attaches to your baby through an opening in your baby's abdomen (where their belly button will be). After birth, your baby is ready to breathe on their own and to get nourishment from feeding.

Cutting the cord is a quick and painless procedure (the cord has no nerve endings).
It can be done by your practitioner or your partner, if you'd like.
